Coverage configuration: Using API - to control coverage analysis.

When setting up configuration to cover an application - section allows for either 'Manually' or 'Using API' to control coverage analysis.   I cannot find any documentation on how 'Using API' works.  What specifically is this option designed to do?  Is there the ability to enable/disable coverage via an API?
